Gordon Brothers Group Acquires Remnants Of CHEF’S Catalog

It appears that beloved online culinary retailer Chef’s Catalog may only be MOSTLY dead. The Gordon Brothers Group, a global advisory, restructuring and investment firm specializing in the industrial, consumer products and retail sectors, announced that it has acquired the inventory, equipment and intellectual property assets of CHEF’S Catalog, including brands, trademarks and domain names.

Until recently, CHEF’S Catalog operated as an independent multi-channel specialty retailer of high-end, branded and private label cookware products through its catalog and online channel. While historically focused on branded, luxury kitchen goods, the company built and maintained its own CHEF’S private label.

The CHEF’s brand ultimately became its top selling brand by 2014, accounting for well over half of product volume. The company’s private label offerings included approximately 1,000 unique SKU’s.

But as we reported here, in 2015 Target purchased Chef’s and then in early 2016 quietly announced they were shutting down the popular online culinary retailer.

“We are excited to acquire one of the premier brands in the kitchen goods area. CHEF’s is known for its high product quality, desirability and design, which provides a strong foundation for the brand’s future growth,” stated Jim Lightburn, Managing Director, Gordon Brothers Group.

Gordon Brothers Group has begun searching for buyers of the assets, including but not limited to the warehouse equipment, rolling stock and excess inventory.

This transaction represents Gordon Brothers Group’s latest brand acquisition, having previously purchased Polaroid, The Sharper Image, Linen’s N Things, The Bombay Company and Coby Electronics, among others.

For those, like myself, who don’t know them, Gordon Brothers Group (, founded in 1903, is a global advisory, restructuring and investment firm specializing in the retail, consumer products, industrial and real estate sectors. The Gordon Brothers Group has a history of rescuing/acquiring both healthy and distressed companies by purchasing or selling all categories of assets, mitigating leases, appraising assets and operating businesses for extended periods.

*Update I received some scuttlebutt that Gordon Brothers Group has sold the Chefs Catalog intellectual property to retailer “Tuesday Morning” and that the Chefs product designer has been brought on board. Perhaps we’ll be seeing Chefs branded items on Tuesday Morning’s shelves before long.

Stay tuned.

If Tuesday Morning is actually going to sell Chef’s they should restart the online catalog sales! I am not real interested in driving to a suburb of Boston to shop for a couple of things I need. Tuesday Morning website is as hard to use as driving the the Cape on Friday during rush hour.

Yay!!!! I hope Chefs products will be available very soon! I couldn’t agree more with what Pamela Minkley wrote above— Chefs employees were the best. I always got the best and fastest and most helpful/curtious service with them. I loved Chefs website. It was so easy to use and nice to see other people’s product reviews. Half the stuff in my kitchen I bought from Chefs, their products are the best!!! I was so astonished that Target closed them down! I didn’t know about it until about March 2016, and I had a $25 Chefs gift certificate. Target had shut down the website so fast, so I went to my local Target store, and after talking to three different managers (!) they gave me an email where I could write to exchange my chefs gift card to a Target one. I wrote to that email twice and never heard back either time! (This is a great example of how Target treats their customers!) I am so pissed at Target for closing Chefs and then ignoring my emails I will NEVER set foot in a Target store ever again. But, I will DEFINITELY be checking out this Tuesday Morning company!!! Thank you for this information, kitchenboy!

Chef’s Catalog is missed terribly in this household. You’ll find Chef’s brand items throughout my kitchen. Their brand was always high quality at a fair price. Their catalog was fun to look at on line and well designed. Customer services was off the charts. Result….a wonderful shopping experiences and loyal customer. I hope Tuesday morning can find some of those who lost their jobs, employ them and keep a great thing great. They speak English well, understand what customer service is and always seemed to not just like, but LOVE their jobs. Where do you find people like that anymore? They are gems that would be valuable to any company. Go get them Tuesday Morning!

As a store manager at Tuesday morning I am excited to see these products. It will be a nice addition to our already great line of products.
