Taste of the Master Chefs (TOMC) welcomed Masters Champion Sergio Garcia to its first annual event on Friday, April 7 during Masters Week in Augusta. Garcia attended the event at the personal invitation of international culinary luminary and TOMC Chef Chair José Andrés.
Newly crowned champion García’s week was spent with the unofficial king of Spanish-American cuisine and García family friend José Andrés. The highly affable chef stayed with the García family during Masters week in Augusta and Chef Andrés made himself a useful guest. In addition to cheering for Sergio, Chef was cooking up Spanish specialties for the golfer and his crew even, according to reports, teaming with Garcia’s longtime caddie, Glen Murray, to make paella for the group.
The inaugural fundraising culinary event welcomed an estimated 500 people to an indoor/outdoor experience at West Lake Country Club that included “Live Fire Theater,” with Arteflame and certified master chef Rich Rosendale, from Washington, DC. Other notable, award-winning chefs who served the best in regional flavors included Michael Gulotta, New Orleans; David Guas, Washington, DC; and Hugo Ortega, Houston, TX, among others. This unique evening helped to raise funds and awareness for food programs at The Salvation Army of Augusta.
“This is the beginning of a new charitable legacy event,” Taste of the Master Chefs Founder Wayne Kostroski said today. “We look forward to making an impact in the Augusta community every year and providing for those in need of the services and food programs available through The Salvation Army of Augusta.”
Andrés is already making plans to return, as next year, García will be in charge of the Masters Champions Dinner menu, and Andrés hopes once again to lend a hand. “We’ll see what Sergio wants to eat and serve; it will probably be Spanish. It’s a club with great traditions, I understand that, and hopefully they will let me help advise the menu.”
