The Republic of Tea Recalls Organic Turmeric Ginger Green Tea

Last week, we reported on the recall of organic tea from CVS due to a salmonella risk and now it seems that at least one other company uses the same supplier. The culprit is the so called organic ginger, and I am guessing there will be more recalls forthcoming from other brands.

For the purposes of this notice it is The Republic of Tea, in response to the aforementioned possible health risk, has issued a recall of their Organic Turmeric Ginger Green Tea. As with the CVS recall, there have been no illnesses reported in connection with this episode. And as of this writing, no other Republic of Tea products are affected by this recall.

Since they share a supplier, Republic of Tea was notified, along with CVS, of the possibility that one lot of its organic ginger ingredients may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.

So you are aware, salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Consumers can return the Organic Turmeric Ginger Green Tea to The Republic of Tea for a replacement tea, or a full refund.

The Republic of Tea and the organic ginger supplier did conduct their own investigations and have tested numerous samples of organic ginger by accredited independent third party laboratories and confirmed the absence of salmonella.

“There is absolutely no evidence that our tea has been contaminated. We are taking this preventive, cautious measure because we want our citizens to feel comfortable when drinking our premium quality teas and herbs,” said Todd B. Rubin, Minister of Evolution at The Republic of Tea. “The health and safety of our citizens is our number one priority and we will not take potential health risks lightly. This voluntary recall is the first in our nearly quarter-century history.”

The Republic of Tea seems much more defensive about this than CVS was in their announcement, but that may stem from the fact that the former feels they are above such problems. Like other large, well meaning companies, Whole Foods comes to mind, The Republic of Tea needs to put a greater emphasis on the supply chain that precedes their control.

Whole Foods, as you may recall, got burned by the peanut recall of 2009, and similarly, one ginger supplier is bringing down multiple tea brands.
