It seems like yesterday, and yet months ago, that thirteen housewares manufacturers were honored as Global Honorees of the IHA Global Innovation Awards (gia) for product design. The Global Honorees in each of 13 categories were announced during the invitation-only gia dinner on the first evening of the 2017 International Home + Housewares Show (IHHS), held March 18 – 21 at McCormick Place in Chicago.
The finals took place the day before IHHS began; all panel judges had an opportunity to see the product finalists laid out side by side to contrast and compare them against one another.
2017 Global Honorees
Cook + Bakeware: Kuhn Rikon Corp., Duromatic® Micro Microwave Pressure Cooker
This product stood out from its competition for the innovative and clever design. Combining Kuhn Rikon’s vast experience, proven pressure cooking technology and the latest microwave-safe materials, it allows the consumer to cook even faster than a traditional pressure cooker.
Kitchen Electrics: Chefman, Perfect Pour Volcano Waffle Maker
This was another instant standout, especially for anyone who makes waffles at home with any frequency. The biggest problem with making waffles is the measurement guesswork, batter leakage, and the messy cleanup time. This new model has remedied these challenges by creating a volcano like top spout through which batter is poured. As the batter flows through the top spout it enters a completely sealed inverted waffle grid that creates a natural gravity batter feed. The gravity feed ensures every nook and cranny is filled with batter.
Kitchen Hand Tools + Cutlery: Joseph Joseph Inc., Helix Citrus Juicer
The aspect that set this product apart is the unique twisting mechanism of this handheld citrus juicer that enables you to get more squeezing power from less effort. The size is best for lemons and limes.
This category was a difficult one to judge as there were some excellent choices that could easily have been chosen winner. Another top favorite for me was WoodNFlex cutting board, which fuses hardwood veneer with food-grade silicone. This was an attractive and functional, multipurpose flexible cutting board.
Kitchenware: Gourmet Kitchen Works LLC, GEFU Sprouting Jar Bivita
The innovative miniature greenhouse uses its integrated ventilation to provide ideal climatic conditions to cultivate fresh sprouts for salads and more in your own kitchen.
This category housed another Kitchenboy favorite, JIA’s The Rolling Mortar. This product innovates the method of crushing, making easier to grind or mix spices. The U-shaped mortar is paired with the wooden roller, ideas for rolling back and forth in the mortar with less effort.
Smart Home: Anova Culinary LLC, Precision Cooker Nano
The Anova Culinary Nano includes Bluetooth so you can control it through Anova’s Android and iOS app. The affordable $99 machine is part of a new line of products that will include a revamped version of Anova’s Precision Cooker with Bluetooth + Wi-Fi.
Tabletop: Magisso North America, Pino Wine Glass
Magisso Pino Glassware Collection is fully stackable to make storing and service more efficient. Each piece is balanced for extra stability and better user experience. The Magisso Pino Glassware is mouth blown by a classic Finnish glass maker Muurla.
Another favorite, particularly of parents, was the Brilli Baby Cup Catcher. The Cup Catcher is a multi-use connector designed to safely tether a sippy cup, bottle, or even a favorite toy to a car seat, highchair, stroller, wheelchair or shopping cart. No more lost, broken and unsanitary children’s drinking containers.
Home Décor + Gifts: Mark Feldstein & Assoc., Inc., No Drip Inverted Umbrella
This umbrella quickly wowed the judges and no, it hasn’t been flipped inside-out by the wind – it’s supposed to look that way. This two-layer umbrella closes upward, trapping water droplets inside, rather than sending them raining down on the user.
Home Organization + Storage: Progressive International Corp., Prepworks Produce ProKeeper
With options for moisture and air flow control, these keepers have the versatility to hold each type of produce under ideal conditions for maximum longevity. Removing the base let’s the keeper be used as a colander to wash produce before storage. Also, the rectangular shape is space efficient in the refrigerator or cabinet.
Personal Care: KOHLER Co., Touchless Foaming Soap Dispenser
Pet Products: Dexas International, Ltd., MudBuster
Bath + Personal Care: Polder Products, LLC, 2-in-1 Hot Sleeve™
Cleaning: Sanimaid ApS, PARIS Toilet Brush & Wall Holder
Household Electrics + Home Environment: Equator Appliances, Super Combo Washer-Dryer EZ 4400 CV
