“Everything’s better with some wine in the belly.” – Tyrion Lannister
Unless you’ve been living under Casterly Rock or are rotting in some Westerosi dungeon, you know that the new season of Game of Thrones (GoT) premieres July 16th. If you are like me, you have been watching the previous seasons on HBO to get your mind refreshed about the previous season’s goings on, which now seem so long ago. Or maybe you are analyzing the trailers for hints as to what surprising twists to expect, but no matter, the GoT addiction is real.
What better way to toast the return of the acclaimed series than with the official Game of Thrones Wines? Created by renowned winemaker and series super-fan Bob Cabral and California’s Vintage Wine Estates, the limited-edition collection is available and might be something you want to drink while enjoying the show or the analysis afterward.
Touted as being worthy of the Iron Throne, each of the three wines available exemplifies the spirit of the hit TV series, matching the strength of the characters and the terrain of their kingdoms.
The Game of Thrones Wine
There are three varieties soon to be on offer – a Chardonnay, a proprietary red blend, and a reserve-style Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Products include:
A rich Red Blend (Paso Robles – $29.95) representing the Three-Headed Dragon of House Targaryen,
A golden Chardonnay (Central Coast – $29.95) symbolic of the Golden Lion of House Lannister,
Intense Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley – $74.95) expressing the Direwolf of House Stark.
“Our customers, fans and fine-wine drinkers alike, have been asking us if Game of Thrones Wine would be available in Ontario and we are thrilled they will be able to uncork a bottle, or collect all three, starting next month,” said Marie Cundari, Acting Director, LCBO Wines. “Rich, complex and fit for any King or Queen, Bob Cabral and Vintage Wine Estates have created products that easily jump from on-screen fantasy to real-world enjoyment.”
According to Vintage Wine Estates, both the red blend and Cabernet Sauvignon were crafted from specially selected vineyards and then “aged in the finest oak barrels.” The wines were conceived by acclaimed winemaker, Bob Cabral was named Winemaker of the Year in 2011 by Wine Enthusiast magazine and has crafted more than 100 wines scoring 95 points or higher on the 100-point scale. Naturally, he’s into the show.
“I’m a huge Game of Thrones fan, and these wines capture the complexity of the drama. But the wines also have great pedigree. We source grapes from premier vineyard sites and use the finest winemaking techniques to create wines of incredible richness and texture.”
